A LETTER TO OUR TRINITY CHURCH COMMUNITY

February 2008

The news from Darfur has been neglected by the press in this country – and therefore neglected by our government as well. Yet it was Colin Powell himself, as Secretary of State, who said that there is GENOCIDE occurring in Darfur. We as a country continue to support the perpetrators of that genocide.

What can we possibly gain from doing this, that in any way excuses our turning a blind eye toward what is still happening? Women are raped, and the elderly too, are being driven from their homes and killed, children are being kidnapped, raped and forced into slave labor. Fellow human beings are interned in camps and slowly starved to death. The Sudanese government has prevented humanitarian aid in terms of food and supplies.

How can we stop this horror from continuing? What can one person do?

It only takes one person to write to a Congressman and ask that he/she look into the situation.

It only takes one person to contact some of the organizations that are already trying to make a difference in this terribly complicated, no-fault genocide.

It only takes one person to talk to another about the genocide occurring in Darfur.
It only takes one person to pray.

It only takes a phone call to ask the organizations you support to divest their financial interests in Sudan.

It only takes one person to change the retirement or investment portfolio to ensure that the companies in which your money is invested is not supporting Sudan.

One person can very easily make a difference, especially when joined by one other, and one other, and one other.

Can we stop another Holocaust? Another Rawanda? The answer is YES, if we …

PRAY!  ACT!  CARE!

Sample letter to be sent to your representative and senators.
