Part: 3
This crew was led by Jay and Amy (lets be honest, Amy was in charge, we just let Jay think he was). They were tasked with only one job. Of course their one job was to strip, haul away, tar-paper, drip-edge, re-boot, re-flash, re-stitch, and re-lay shingles on a very steep house. As you can see in the pictures, the back part of the house was very shallow and not too steep. However, due to the fact that the ground sloped down and the pitch on the front roof was at a very high angle, the front roof proved to be a very challenging endeavor. Another challenge to this job was the fact that the home-owner requested that the shingles be stitched in the valley. What that means is basically, at the meeting of two angles on a roof, the shingles would be woven one over the other to create a water-tight barrier. The youth on this crew wanted this house to look so nice that one evening they sat down with Mike to go over how to properly stitch and start shingles. (I have to tell you, as a former construction crew-member, the end result was very impressive ~ Mike.) This project took the entire week and involved this crew starting earlier than others as to avoid some of the heat with black shingles on a roof, and was finished at four-thirty pm on the last day of work. The end result of all the time, the heat, the practice, the aggravation, and the laughter, was a roof on a house which looked great, and I am certain worked even better. (Click for larger View) |
