Day 6:   (Page 1 of 6)

We started the day by attending the interrment of Aunt June in the newly refurbished memorial garden. Ann had requested that George sing Amazing Grace at the service. He made us proud!! After the service, Mike and Jay completed the service by placing dirt upon the cremated remains of Aunt June. We then headed back to the work site. It was very hot and humid that day. We arrived on the site to see that Mr and Mrs Coputo had provided drinks and snacks for all of us. The only grocery store on the island, Winn Dixie, sustained heavy damage from the storms and was kept open by the management of the store so that they could continue to provide food to the residences of the island. Work continued with the young people using the skill that they had learned throughout the week. Tom, Jay and Mike proved to be able mentors to the kids in the construction aspects of the projects. Another group of kids worked on the gazebo, while another group cleared out the existing weeds and replaced them with very attractive shrubs and flowers out in the front yard. Yet another group was working on the roof sealing it from sustaining any more water damage by “painting” on a rubber based mixture that was the consistency of toothpaste. After a very long and exhausting day we retuned to the pool for much needed showers (editor’s note-Trust me, we needed several showers!) After cleaning up we headed north to a local restaurant on the bay. We had a wonderful dinner followed by an amazing display of colors as we watched the sun set. Mike then got creative with the camera and took pictures of different groups and in different positions on the pier. After dinner we went in different direction to explore the island. (We tied a string to Ginny’s van so she wouldn’t get to lost) One group went to the Fisherman’s Co-op where local fishermen sell their catches to restaurants and stores. They were recently sold to a Miami development company and were scheduled to be torn down on July 5th to make room for new condos. Their were a few fishermen there when we arrived and were happy to take some of their time and show us what they did for a living. After that we stopped of the shore and caught some crabs (I gave mine to Brandon. he-he) When we got done on the shore it was decided that we needed some coconuts so off we went and we gathered coconuts. Once that was done back to home (church) we went. Along the way, we observed that some houses were already boarded up in anticipation of the arriving storms. It served as a sobering reminder as to what the residents of Pine Island view as a norm. We returned and were pleased to see that Ginny had indeed found her way back. So tired we all called it a night.
