Day 3:
The morning began with Dave complaining yet again about his prized
possession going limp but Ginny and Pam gloated that their's stayed up all night. Those pesky air mattresses.
|
After breakfast, Julie the church secretary arrived and Mike, Jay & Tom fell to their knees giving due homage that all church secretaries are due. See picture.
(Right Sheila?)
Once the groveling was ended, we went out to unload 50 40# bags of topsoil which was donated for the memorial garden which we are replanting on Tuesday as our gift to the parish for their incredible hospitality. |

Then off to Beacon of Hope, the agency we are working for. Beacon was formed in the wake of the 2004 hurricanes to help coordinate relief efforts for the people of the island. Beacon is a collaborative ministry of the Roman Catholic, Methodist, Lutheran and of course the Episcopalians. Ann the vicar of St Johns, is the president of the board of directors. She is pictured in Day 1's pictures. The people still most affected by the hurricanes are the middle class. Beacon made the comment that they were happy that they had to look up to see our eyes and that we had skills, even father
Dave has a talent. Beacon was glad that we tall enough to put on tarps and work on the ceiling.
Once we received our briefing, we left to go to Pink Citrus trailer park where many of the residents are migrant workers and illegal therefore they are fearful to ask the government for aid. The eye of the hurricane passed directly over the park. We continue restoration of a donated mobile home which will be habitated by 2 cousins. We painted the exterior a beautiful shade of sky blue with peach trim on the ends. Hey we didn't pick the colors. We also repaired the drop ceiling and are working on the flashing on the roof.
A second crew starting painting another trailer, this time a nice shade of white while the occupants slept inside. Our day was cut short due to the impending thunder storm, which never materialized. We took the opportunity to go to the community pool and take showers.
Dinner for the evening consisted of a local delicacy, Pork Bellies. Tony is still eating and it is now 10 pm After dinner, the kids cleaned the bathrooms, and George washed dishes in the sink for the first time, see picture.
We also learned that George was asked to sing Amazing Grace at an interment of the ashes of "Aunt June", a founding member of the parish. Whose nephew provided the pizzas the first night. Have we mentioned HOSPITALITY!
God bless you and good night!
P.S. One of the kids snuck a cow pie into the girls bathroom. But was it a cow pie or was it a heffer, bull or steer pie? Stay tuned.
