Sacrament Blitz in NYC
2006
The youth confirmation class visited NYC for a sacramental blitz on Saturday
and Sunday May 6 & 7. After an early Saturday morning departure from
Ambler, we drove to St. Paul's, Rahway from where we departed by train into
Manhattan. The first church we visited was the Cathedral of St. John the
Divine, the world's largest gothic cathedral, at 110th St and Amsterdam Ave.
We were present for the ordination of a deacon by the bishop and joined in the celebration of the
Eucharist. Teenagers and clergy were famished by the end of the liturgy and we dined on Italian
cuisine across the street from the Cathedral.
We took a bus down the West Side passing by Lincoln Center where we saw David Blaine submerged in a giant fish bowl and onto Times Square. We split
into smaller groups and visited stores and saw the sights. One group passed
thru Toys R Us and thought about buying John Dziel the Ferris wheel for the
parish carnival but we didn't know how we were going to fit it into the
subway car.
Just off of Times Square on 46th Street we visited The Church of St. Mary
the Virgin where those that wished were able to participate in sacramental
confession. Then we treked over to Park Ave and 51st Street to attend a
wedding at St. Bartholomew's Church.
The South Street Seaport was our next destination where we saw street entertainers, shopped, and ate dinner. We took the subway and train back to
Rahway where we spent the night.
Sunday morning we went back into Manhattan where Fr. Canan made his second
visit to the sacrament at Duncan Donuts [Fr. Canan had already visited Duncan Donuts at 6 a.m and
Eucharist at 7 a.m. at St. Paul's, Rahway], we had breakfast, and then we attended morning worship at St. Thomas, 5th Ave
and 53rd Street. The Bishop of New York was present for the affirmation of
baptismal vows thru confirmation and reception. We returned to Penn Station
for lunch and returned to Rahway to drive home to Ambler having experienced
five sacramental rites in two days. |
